Our project allows us to use Vail Commons as a site to look at Davidson’s commitment to sustainability. I was not sure where a campus like ours would fit in to sustainable practices, especially when looking at food because of the limited dining options that are available. What I have learned when starting to research is that Davidson is making fast progress and is catching up to institutions that have been using sustainable discourse for as many as seven years. This is helpful in designing a plan for Vail Commons. We are able to take similar programs and initiatives that come from similar institutions and apply them to what fits at Davidson. Each institution has plans that look different based on the needs of the college. It is important that we consider the needs of the staff and students at Davidson when developing plans for food purchasing and sustainable practices.
